Pacific 10 Roundup : Kerr Sets Record for Three-Pointers as Arizona Wins

Arizona senior guard Steve Kerr, who scored 16 points and set a Pacific 10 Conference season record for three-pointers in Thursday night’s 89-57 victory over Oregon at Tucson, said his third-ranked Wildcats aren’t worried about their fall from No. 1.

“I don’t think any of us really thought about being No. 3,” Kerr said. “We had our chance at No. 1, and now it’s somebody else’s turn. What matters is how we play in the (NCAA) tournament.”

Kerr made five of seven three-pointers, and his second of the night broke the conference mark of 69, set by UCLA’s Reggie Miller. Kerr now has 73.

Anthony Cook added 23 points as Arizona (22-2 overall and 11-1 in Pac-10 games) outscored Oregon, 28-4, in the final 13 minutes. The Ducks dropped to 10-10 and 5-6.

Oregon St. 78, Arizona St. 75--Eric Knox and Will Brantley scored 19 points apiece as the Beavers held off a late Sun Devil rally to win at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State had cut a 48-34 deficit to 76-75 on a John Jerome layup with 30 seconds remaining. Oregon State’s Gary Payton then missed a free throw with 15 seconds left.

Arthur Thomas, who led all scorers with 22 points, drove the lane for the Sun Devils in an attempt for the possible winning basket only to have Payton steal the ball with three seconds left.

Beaver center Bill Sherwood was fouled one second later after a scramble and sank two ensuing free throws to seal the victory.

The win was Oregon State’s fourth straight and improved its record to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the Pac-10. Arizona State fell to 13-9 and 6-6.

California 84, Washington 82--Keith Smith stole an in-bounds pass and fed Matt Beeuwsaert for the winning basket with eight seconds left in overtime at Seattle as the Golden Bears (7-13, 4-8) nipped the Huskies (6-14, 2-9) at Seattle.

Eldridge Recasner of the Huskies sent the game into overtime with a line-drive three-point basket from 22 feet with seven seconds remaining in regulation play.

Stanford 51, Washington St. 50--Howard Wright drove for a layin with 31 seconds left to give the Cardinal (16-7, 8-4) a victory over the Cougars (10-10, 5-6) at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State’s John Hodges missed a 15-foot jumpshot with three seconds left. WSU had come from behind in the closing minutes to claim a 50-49 lead with 50 seconds left to play.

Wright led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
