Local News in Brief : Building Fire May Be Arson

A $2.75-million fire that destroyed a Los Feliz apartment complex under construction may have been intentionally set, although arson investigators have yet to pinpoint the cause of the blaze, authorities said Friday.

“From preliminary indications . . . (the fire) was not caused by natural causes,” Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Gary Svider said. “It’s suspicious.”

Capt. Gary Seidel, an arson inspector heading the probe, added, “We can’t rule out transients and kids who have gotten into the construction site” in the past and may be responsible for setting the fire.

Investigators were in the Normandie Avenue neighborhood Friday in hopes of finding someone who may have information on the fire. “We’ll continue doing that until we get some real leads,” Seidel said.
