Valentines Can Bask in Sunshine’s Warm Glow

San Diego meteorologists have promised county residents a perfect weather valentine for today, with clear skies and warm weather forecast for all areas.

Some moderate wind gusts may accompany the temperatures in canyon and mountain areas.

High pressure over the Great Basin area of Nevada and Utah will continue the weeklong trend of sunny weather throughout Southern California, Dan Atkin of the National Weather Service office at Lindbergh Field said Saturday.

And the long-range picture shows few signs of the high pressure weakening at least through most of the upcoming week, he said.

“As far as we can tell, there will be fair weather through most of the period,” Atkin said. The high pressure has from time to time strengthened and weakened during the past several days, he said, but maintained its general location.

When it strengthens, an offshore wind develops into a Santa Ana wind pattern, creating the gusty winds in mountain and canyon areas. When it weakens, there is either no wind at all, or a weak onshore flow, but insufficient to bring the night and morning coastal fog and low clouds usually seen this time of year.

Highs today will range from 73 along the coast to the high 70s inland. Lows will be in the low 50s along the coast and in the mid-40s inland. Saturday’s high at Lindbergh Field was 76 degrees.

The nice weather brought about 65,000 people to county beaches on Saturday, and lifeguards expect continued high numbers today for a mid-winter weekend. No major surf problems or rescues were reported on Saturday.
