San Diego Sports et Cetera : Perry Scores 30 Points as SDSU Beats Fresno St.

Chana Perry scored 30 points and had 20 rebounds as the San Diego State women’s basketball team defeated Fresno State, 78-57, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Peterson Gym Saturday night.

Perry, who made 12 of 14 free throws, scored 17 points in the first half when SDSU (18-5, 9-3 in PCAA) led, 37-26. The game was tied early at 6, but SDSU went on a 10-point run and put it out of reach.

Jessica Haynes had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals for SDSU.

While the Aztecs shot only 36% (25 of 69), the Aztec defense held Fresno State (10-11, 5-7) to only 25% (16 of 62) from the field.

Irene Roblef scored 19 points as Fresno Pacific beat Point Loma Nazarene College, 70-65, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma Nazarene.

Fresno Pacific (17-6, 7-2) led by one with three minutes to play, then scored three straight baskets.

Ann Duffy scored 21 points for Point Loma Nazarene (17-9, 4-4).

Jill Koster scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds for UC San Diego (8-13), which beat UC Santa Cruz, 82-42, in a nonconference game at UCSD.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Despite 37 points from John Griffin, UC San Diego defeated UC Santa Cruz, 69-65, in a nonconference game at UCSD.

UCSD led at halftime, 37-29, but trailed, 55-53, with 8:43 to play. UCSD (15-8) regained the lead for good, 56-55, when Kirk Kramer, who had 13 points, scored with 7:03 left.

Junior Mark Ryan scored 20 points, all in the second half, as host Point Loma Nazarene defeated Fresno Pacific College, 99-96, in overtime in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Steve Riddle topped Point Loma Nazarene (9-16, 3-7), which overcame a 15-point second half deficit, with 26 points. Clayton Williams had 20 and John Ekeroth added 13.

Donnie Johnson scored a game-high 35 points for Fresno Pacific (9-14, 4-7).

Mark Kraatz made 13 of 15 shots and scored 30 points in Christian Heritage’s 119-60 victory over West Coast Christian.

Christian Heritage (13-11) made 53 of 73 shots. Dwayne Burden was 12 of 17 and had 25 points. Dave Kirksey was 7 of 9 for 18 points.

Lorenzo Romar scored 39 points, including 3 three-pointers in a key stretch at the beginning of the second half in Athletes in Action’s 100-86 victory over Grand Canyon College at Phoenix.

TENNIS

North Greenville defeated the Grossmont College men’s team, 9-0, in a match at Tigerville, S.C. Both North Greenville and Anderson, S.C., which Grossmont (0-2) played Friday, are ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA.

The best match of the day was No. 1 doubles. Juan Alvarez and Rene Gomez of North Greenville (2-0) beat Joe Thomas and Dave Mercado, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 in a 2 1/2-hour match. Haruo NaKena beat Kirk Edwards, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 1 singles.

The University of San Diego men’s team won the San Diego Intercollegiate tournament on USD’s West Courts. USD had 51 points to defeat Nebraska and Cal State Long Beach, which each had 34.

Rick Matheson was one of three USD finalists, but he was the only one to win. He beat Nick Bonner, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.

USD’s Jennifer Larking defeated Jackie Holden, 6-3, 6-0, as the USD women’s team beat Mississippi State, 7-2, in the second round of the University of Arizona Invitational at Tucson. USD swept the singles.

SOFTBALL

UCSD scored only two runs in two games and lost twice to Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0 and 5-2, in a nonconference game at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

After stranding four runners in scoring position in the last four innings of the first game, UCSD (0-2) let Cal Poly Pomona score three runs in the first inning.

Robin Mitchell hit her first home run in the third inning for the only run in the first game. Teammate Lisa Voss hit a home run in the fourth inning of the second game for Cal Poly Pomona (2-2).
