Local News in Brief : Suspect Held in Murder
A man wanted for questioning in connection with the Feb. 1 shooting of a prominent South Los Angeles woman was being held without bail on suspicion of murder after he turned himself in to police Friday afternoon.
Police said Makeitha Christon, 34, turned himself in after a warrant was issued for him by officers seeking to question him about the murder of Hertycine Johnson, 37. A meeting was planned with the district attorney’s office this week to determine whether to file formal charges against Christon, police said.
Johnson, whose bullet-riddled body was found at the intersection of 42nd Street and Raymond Avenue, was an active member of the California Black Republican Council and a divorced mother of two.
She had been a prison guard until 1980 at the California Institution for Women in Chino and had worked as a leasing manager at Harbor City Honda in Wilmington. She was also a former backup singer at Marla’s Memory Lane, a South Los Angeles nightclub.
