Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said in Pittsburgh that because of ever-increasing peer pressure among players, baseball will never again endure the kind of drug scandal that tarnished the sport’s image in 1985.

Speaking in the city where a federal trial revealed scores of players once used drugs, Ueberroth said the taint of the scandal “hasn’t been erased . . . but there are too many people paying too much attention to the institution of baseball to let it happen again.”

Players who once may have remained silent while others used drugs now are vehemently anti-drugs because they refuse to be labeled as users, Ueberroth said at Carnegie-Mellon University.
