The 1988 winners of the county’s 10-category knowledge contest were announced Thursday night at an awards banquet at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

Los Alamitos High was overall winner, with 40,581 points, and moves on to competition at the state level. Foothill High, the top scorer for the previous three years, finished second with 40,115 points. Sunny Hills High in Fullerton Union High School District finished third with 39,630 points.

Orange County Schools Supt. Robert Peterson was honored at the banquet for pioneering the decathlon 20 years ago, when he was first elected.

Under decathlon rules, each school fields a six-member team composed of two A-average students; two B-average students, and two C-average students.

The teams compete in economics, essays, fine arts, interviews, literature and language, mathematics, science, social science, speech and a so-called “super quiz.”

This year Dana Hills High from the Capistrano Unified School District and Loara High School of Anaheim Union High School District tied in the super quiz, both scoring 3,800 points.
