The switching operator who bolted from his post moments after an Amtrak train derailed last month 15 miles south of here has quit his job, railroad officials said Thursday.

Thomas Connor, 30, cited “the physical and emotional stress” of the Jan. 29 accident, in which 24 people were injured, in a resignation letter submitted to Amtrak officials.

Connor, who admitted that he mistakenly switched the train onto a track occupied by a work crew, was to have appeared before Amtrak officials Thursday to answer questions about the accident and faced possible dismissal.
