Local News in Brief : RTD Ordered to Pay Fine
The RTD was ordered Friday to pay a $1,900 fine by a Municipal Court commissioner after the transit agency pleaded no contest to criminal charges that its workers illegally polluted the Los Angeles River with a corrosive chemical.
The incident occurred last June 25 when RTD workers at a downtown bus repair garage flushed a degreasing agent into a storm drain, despite a large sign posted in the maintenance facility warning not to do so, City Atty. James Hahn said.
Los Angeles police spotted a white stain flowing in the river from a helicopter.
