CSUN Women Retain Lead in Swim Meet

The Cal State Northridge women’s swim team is performing like the defending national champion that it is at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships in Bakersfield.

The Lady Matadors held a 567-417 lead over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the team standings after the third day of the four-day meet. The CSUN men, meanwhile, are currently second behind Bakersfield in the team standings with 233 points.

Jeanna Giessinger, Jude Kylander and Michelle Sulak swept the top three places in the 200-yard freestyle event to lead the Lady Matadors on Saturday.

Giessinger won the 200 free in 1:54.32, Kylander was second at 1:55.28 and Sulak placed third in 1:56.21. Carolyn Churchill finished sixth for Northridge in 1:56.21.

The CSUN women also won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.47, and two other swimmers won separate events. Chris Breedy won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.08 seconds and Carol Eisele captured the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:38.78.

Northridge’s Sharon Elm placed third in the 100 butterfly at 59.76 seconds, and teammates Tina Dodson and Tina Schnare were fifth and sixth, respectively. Dodson finished in 1:00.87 and Schnare in 1:01.26.

CSUN’s Lisa Dial was second to Eisele in the 400 individual medley at 4:38.78 and Cynthia Snyder finished fourth in 4:44.20.

For the Northridge men, Ted Hollahan finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:41.51) and Sherman Poole placed fifth in the 100 butterfly in 52.17.
