More than 13,000 Pacific Bell customers are expected to be without telephone service for the next two days after a fire burned through nine major cables in Santa Ana Monday, causing an estimated $1 million in damage, fire officials said.

The 5-inch-thick cables beneath the Santiago Creek Bridge at Main Street each carry about 1,500 service lines, according to Linda Bonniksen, spokeswoman for Pacific Bell in Santa Ana.

Bonniksen said many lines were not affected by the flames but were soaked by water used to put out the fire.

The fire, which is under investigation by the Santa Ana Fire Department’s arson investigation team, caused very little physical damage, Battalion Chief Tom Skelly said.

Skelly added that it took “just a moment” for a single engine company to extinguish the blaze, which was reported at about 11 a.m.
