Tennis Roundup : Lendl Wins in Rout; Grabb Surprises Smid
Eighth-seeded Tomas Smid was upset, while top-seeded Ivan Lendl overpowered his opponent Wednesday in the $600,000 U.S. Pro Indoor Tennis Championships at Philadelphia.
Smid won a second-set tiebreaker then lost the deciding set to unseeded Jim Grabb, who won the match, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, defeated Richey Reneberg, 6-2, 6-2, in 1 hour 23 minutes.
At Fairfax, Va., Pam Shriver defeated Sylvia Hanika, 6-2, 6-0, to move into the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tournament.
Barbara Potter and Natalia Zvereva also won in straight sets. Potter eliminated Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union, 7-6, 6-0, and Zvereva beat Robin White, 6-4, 6-2.
