Once again, Orange County has shown itself to be the most Republican county in the state, according to the latest voter registration figures released by the secretary of state’s office.

“Orange County leads the Republican counties with its 54.51% registration breakdown,” Secretary of State March Fong Eu said in a written statement Friday.

Democrats account for 35.33% of the county’s registered voters, the lowest margin of any of the state’s 58 counties. The remainder of the registered voters either declined to state a party or registered with one of the minor parties.

San Francisco County remains the Democratic stronghold of the state, with 64.57% of its registered voters listing themselves as Democrats contrasted with 18.38% Republicans--by far the lowest GOP portion in the state.

Statewide, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by 1.5 million, with 50.70% of the registered voters. This contrasts with 38.38% for Republicans, 8.79% decline-to-state; 1.14% American Independent Party, 0.39% Libertarian Party, 0.35% Peace and Freedom Party and 0.24% miscellaneous parties.

Numerically, Orange County was second only to Los Angeles County in the number of Republicans, with 565,517 Republicans, compared to its northern neighbor’s 1,197,185. San Diego, which has more registered voters overall than does Orange County, came in third with 511,102 Republicans.

Orange County ranked fourth in Democratic registration, behind Los Angeles, San Diego and Alameda counties. Sacramento County was fifth and San Francisco County sixth.

Voter registration closes May 9 for people wishing to vote in the June 7 primary.
