College Roundup : Fullerton Rallies to Win Its Seventh Straight, 12-6

Cal State Fullerton rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat UCLA, 12-6, Wednesday in a nonconference baseball game at UCLA.

It was the seventh straight victory for Fullerton (12-6).

Trailing by 5-0 after two innings, Fullerton scored three runs in the third, two on a single by Shane Flores. After UCLA scored a run in the bottom of the third, Fullerton came back with three runs in the fourth. Rex Peters’ two-run single tied the score, 6-6.

The Titans took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Ralph Ramirez, who had three hits and three RBIs, and a single by Greg Mannion, who had two hits and two RBIs. Fullerton increased its lead with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth.

After a shaky first three innings, Longo Garcia (5-1) pitched five shutout innings for the victory. Garcia struck out eight and walked four.

Dave Zancanaro (0-2) was one of six pitchers for UCLA (12-7).

In other games:

UC Irvine 12, Cal Baptist 3--Jeff Oberdank went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs as host UC Irvine earned its fourth straight victory.

The Anteaters (11-9-1) broke the game open with a four-run second inning. With the score tied, 2-2, Irvine loaded the bases, and Oberdank, who raised his average to .462, singled up the middle to drive in two runs.

Irvine had 13 hits, with John Seeburger and Gordon Staab each getting two. Seeburger also drove in two runs. Jeff Haack pitched three innings for the victory. Haack (2-3) allowed just one earned run. Fred Whatley (1-5) took the loss for Cal Baptist (3-11).

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Chapman 6, UC Riverside 2--Jeff Kidwiler had four hits and Panther starter Jim Bennett did not allow a hit over the first five innings in Chapman’s victory at Hart Park.

Kidwiler had four singles in four at-bats to raise his average to .417. Bennett (1-1) pitched a four-hitter, walking seven and striking out three. Bryan Beals added two hits for Chapman (8-10-1, 1-1).

Riverside’s Troy Kent (2-3) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings. Ty Murphy had two of the four hits for Riverside (9-11, 1-1).

In women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Fullerton 0--Courtney Weichsel defeated Nicole Brechtbuhl, 6-4, 7-6, to lead host Irvine (9-4) in a nonconference match.

Cal State Northride 9, Chapman 0--Allison Kincaid defeated Michelle Dobeck, 6-2, 6-1, to lead host Cal State Northridge. Chapman is 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

In men’s volleyball:

San Diego State 3, Chapman 0--Bill Boulliane had 10 kills to lead San Diego State to a 15-2, 15-7, 15-4 victory at Chapman. San Diego State is 7-9, and Chapman is 4-5.
