A seven-hour confrontation between a police SWAT team and a man who had barricaded himself in his mother’s home in Paradise Hills ended Thursday morning when officers used tear gas to force the man out of the house. No shots were fired, and no one was injured.

Police said the incident began shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday when Donald Hower, 41, and his brother William, 49, refused to pay a cab fare and got into a fight with the driver who had brought them to their mother’s house on the 2600 block of Calle Quebrada.

Their mother, who had a temporary restraining order out against William Hower, fled to a neighbor’s home and the two men barricaded themselves in the house.

A SWAT team arrived about 3:30 a.m. and was told by one of the men that he had a gun and would shoot anyone who entered the house. The brothers also threatened to set fire to the house, police said.

William Hower surrendered to authorities at 7:30 a.m. and was taken to County Mental Health. Donald Hower held the SWAT team at bay until 10:30 a.m., when officers shot tear gas into the house. Hower fled through the back door and was taken into custody. He was taken to County Mental Health and then transferred to the county jail on a charge of resisting arrest.
