Pitcher Jim Abbott, who was born without a right hand, could become the first baseball player to receive the Sullivan Award as the nation’s best amateur athlete.
Basketball center David Robinson, hurdler Greg Foster, swimmer Janet Evans and gymnast Scott Johnson also are among 10 finalists for the Amateur Athletic Union’s award, which will be presented Monday night at the Indiana Convention Center.
Abbott, a 20-year-old University of Michigan junior, had an 8-1 record with the U.S. team last summer, including the first U.S. victory over a Cuban national team in 25 years.
Other finalists include boxer Kelcie Banks, volleyball player Karch Kiraly, synchronized swimmer Tracie Ruiz-Conforto and wrestlers Mark Schultz and John Smith.
