Dart Group said it will abandon its $1.03-billion takeover bid for Stop & Shop Cos. and return all tendered shares to stockholders. Stop & Shop announced on Feb. 29 that it had agreed to be acquired in a $1.23-billion leveraged buyout by the investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Dart, which launched its takeover bid in January, said it was “uneconomic to bid further.” It denied last month that it made the bid only to push up Stop & Shop’s price and profit on its holdings. Dart has acquired more than 730,000 shares of Stop & Shop, or about 2.7% of the firm’s shares.
