A 16-year-old Mt. Carmel High School student was in critical condition after attempting to commit suicide on school grounds Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

The girl, whose name was not released, shot herself in the stomach with a .38-caliber handgun, police said, and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

Principal Sandra Johnson said the girl’s guardian had called the school shortly after 8 a.m. to say that she thought the 10th-grader had taken a gun to school and that she was possibly suicidal.

“The assistant principal went to her classroom to try and locate her but she was not there,” Johnson said. “He returned to the office and almost immediately we got the report: a shot in the girls’ bathroom.”

Johnson said no one else was in the bathroom at the time.
