Local News in Brief : South County : Proposal for New City to Appear on June Ballot
The incorporation of the Dana Point and Capistrano Beach communities was placed on the June 7 ballot Tuesday in a unanimous vote by the Board of Supervisors.
The board’s decision means that if a majority of voters within the proposed boundaries approve the incorporation in June, the area will become Orange County’s 28th city on Jan. 1, 1989.
The new city, not yet named, would include Dana Point, Capistrano Beach and a coastal strip between South Laguna and Dana Point.
On the same ballot, voters will be asked to elect a city council that will assume office if the incorporation is approved.
The incorporation has been controversial because residents of Laguna Niguel have tried to retain the coastal strip in their community. Residents in the coastal area, however, voted to join Dana Point in an advisory vote in November.
