STATWATCH : Ailing Enowitz Compounded Plight of Grant in 3-A Loss to Jordan

There had been three constants in Grant’s basketball season this year--good shooting, good rebounding and Danny Enowitz. When all three disappeared against L. A. Jordan in the City Section 3-A Division championship Friday, Grant did too, losing, 56-41.

Grant, which shot 45% from the field for the season, made only 14 of 40 shots (35%) against Jordan. “We had an off day shooting,” Coach Howard Levine said. “I don’t know why. It may have been the Sports Arena, I don’t know.

“We just couldn’t find the hole. You don’t win too many ball games shooting 14 for 40.”

You also don’t win too many games being outrebounded, 44-29. The Lancers had outrebounded 15 of their previous 16 opponents before facing Jordan. The one time they were outrebounded during that string was in their 76-59 loss to East Valley League opponent North Hollywood.

“They were just killing us on the boards,” Enowitz said.

And it did not help that Enowitz was still suffering from a flu that had kept him out of three practices last week. “Danny’s the unspoken leader and in that kind of situation, when the pressure is on, everyone was looking to our top gun,” Levine said. “When he went down, it took the whole team down.”

Enowitz, who led the team in scoring with a 17-point average and was second in rebounding with 8.1 a game, scored 8 points on 4-of-11 shooting and had 3 rebounds.

Hitting: Four Chatsworth players--Joel Wolfe, Rex McMackin, Eric Niece and Art Lowe--were each 3 for 7 in the Chancellors’ first two games. . . . Olonzo Woodfin, Sylmar’s All-City pitcher, is still mowing down the batters, but this season, he also has become a good hitter. Woodfin has 5 hits, 3 runs batted in, and 2 stolen bases in Sylmar’s first three games. He also pitched a one-hitter in the Spartans’ first game and threw a shutout in their third. “He’s a good hitter, he can be one of the best hitters in the area,” Sylmar Coach John Klitsner said. “But his No. 1 value to us is as a pitcher.” . . . Monroe pitcher-first baseman Tim Costic has 2 home runs and 4 RBIs in 2 games and allowed 1 earned run in 5 innings in a 13-10 win over Palisades.

Newbury Park’s Don Smith hit a home run in each of the Panthers’ first three games. The 6-0, 160-pound center fielder was 4 for 5 in Saturday’s doubleheader, which Newbury Park split with Buena. The Southern Section record for home runs in a season is 16, set by Channel Islands’ Arnold Garcia in 1981. The Panthers have hit six, but have a long way to go for the team record--Glendora hit 51 in 1985.

Poly’s All-City outfielder Luis Porres, who hit .490 last year, is 4 for 11 with a home run and a triple in his first 3 games for the Parrots. . . . Another All-City selection, Kennedy shortstop Gino Tagliaferri, led the Golden Cougars (3-0) in their first two games last week, both wins. Tagliaferri was 7 for 9 with 7 RBIs, including a pair of three-run home runs. He is 8 for 12 on the season after Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Venice.

Pitching: Kennedy senior left-hander Colin Hines (2-0) threw a complete-game three-hitter in a 9-0 win over Santa Monica, a perennial Southern Section power, last week in a Westside tournament game. Hines, who was 5-4 with a 2.17 ERA last year, struck out 6 and walked 4. Hines was nearly as perfect in a 4-1 win over Venice on Tuesday, allowing no earned runs in a complete-game three-hitter.
