Two sewage spills in Oceanside poured about 1,850 gallons of sewage into the ocean and a nearby lagoon early Thursday morning when sewer lines became blocked, the county Health Services Department reported.

The first spill began at 2 a.m. when a manhole overflowed at 1508 S. Pacific St. About 250 gallons of sewage spilled before the flow was stopped, county spokeswoman Maricela Ray said.

A second line blockage in the same area occurred at 7:45 a.m., dumping 1,600 gallons of sewage into Loma Alta Lagoon, Ray said. Utility crews contained the spill at 9:05 a.m.

Signs warning of contamination have been posted for 200 yards on each side of the Pacific Street spill and are expected to remain for at least 24 hours, Ray said. Additional warnings were placed for 200 feet of Buccaneer Beach along the southern side of the lagoon, and those signs will remain up for at least five days.
