Tennis Roundup : Mecir Defeats Agassi, 7-6, 6-1

Second-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia defeated eighth-seeded Andre Agassi, 7-6, 6-1, at Orlando, Fla., Thursday to become the only seeded player in the semifinals of the $415,000 Du Pont tennis tournament.

Mecir had a 6-3 lead, and 3 set points, against his 17-year-old opponent in the tiebreaker before closing out the set, 8-6.

Today, Mecir will face David Pate, who advanced by beating Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union will play Jay Berger in the other semifinal. Chesnokov beat Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Berger defeated Aaron Krickstein, 6-4, 6-3.

Second-seeded Chris Evert and third-seeded Pam Shriver advanced to the quarterfinals of a $300,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Boca Raton, Fla.

Evert defeated Peanut Louie Harper, 6-1, 6-3, and Shriver eliminated Nicole Provis of Australia, 6-4, 6-0. Shriver won the second set in 12 minutes as Provis managed only 12 points.

Earlier, 11th-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez stunned fifth-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, and Pascale Paradis of France upset eighth-seeded Raffaella Reggi of Italy, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
