Al Martinez Wins Headliner

Los Angeles Times columnist Al Martinez has won a National Headliner Award as the best local columnist in the United States during 1987.

The winners were announced Friday by contest officials of the Atlantic City Press Club, sponsor of the 54-year-old competition.

Entries were received from more than 700 newspapers, according to Diane D’Amico, executive director of the competition. Column-writing, she said, was the largest single category.

The judges were working journalists from a dozen newspapers.

Martinez, whose columns appear in the Valley and Westside editions, was named best local columnist in California earlier this month by the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.
