Bob Weltlich, University of Texas basketball coach, has been fired, an Austin newspaper and television station reported Monday night.

A news conference has been called for this morning to announce the coach’s dismissal, reported the Austin American-Statesman, which quoted one member of the team and several sources close to the team. KTBC-TV, Austin, also reported that Weltlich had been fired.

George Muller, 7-foot 2-inch sophomore center, said: “Coach called and said he wouldn’t be our coach anymore.”

“After turning it around at the end, I wasn’t expecting it,” Muller said. “I didn’t think it would be a problem.”

Weltlich, contacted at his home Monday night, told the newspaper: “I have no interest in talking to you. There’s nothing I’m going to talk about.”

Weltlich’s six-year record at Texas is 77-98. Questions arose about his job security after the Longhorns lost to Rice and dropped to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Southwest Conference earlier this season. However, Texas won 9 of its last 12 games.
