KCBS-TV Channel 2 has lured award-winning investigative reporter Judd McIlvain away from KTTV-TV Channel 11 to serve as its new “trouble shooting/consumer reporter.” McIlvain, who will appear on Channel 2’s “Action News” for the first time Monday, will be employed at KCBS in a “Dear Abby concept,” a KCBS spokeswoman said, presenting consumer advocacy stories of general interest on the air as well as working behind the scenes to help solve viewer-submitted consumer problems. McIlvain won a 1987 Golden Mike Award at Channel 11 for best specialized segment in a local newscast and recently drew praise for his story on some radio stations’ bogus helicopter traffic reports. He replaces former KCBS trouble-shooter Tom Vacar, whose contract with the station was not renewed.
