The Houston chapter of the National Organization for Women is upset about Astro pitcher Bob Knepper’s comments that women should not be baseball umpires.
A statement charging Knepper with sex discrimination is being sent to the Houston Sports Assn., owner of the Astros, in hopes the organization will “come out and say this (Knepper’s statement) isn’t right,” NOW President Kathy Aubin said.
Knepper has received extensive media coverage since saying this week that the National League should not hire Pam Postema as the first woman umpire in the major leagues because God has ordained women to be submissive and not hold positions of authority.
Aubin said Knepper is entitled to his beliefs, but that when he involves an individual, he fosters “an insidious bias and he is guilty of sex discrimination.”
