Restoration of ‘Red Car’ Train Station Begun
The six-month, $517,000 restoration of the Watts train station, designated a Los Angeles cultural-historical monument in 1974, has begun at 103rd Street and Grandee Avenue.
Driver-Eddy Construction Co. of Santa Fe Springs is handling restoration of the 1,800-square-foot, 1904-vintage wooden structure. When the restoration is complete, the station will look as it did when it was a major stop on the Pacific Electric line between Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The restoration is being done in advance of the 1990 completion of the new Los Angeles to Long Beach light-rail line that will stop about 90 feet from the station.
Most of the restored station will be leased to the Department of Water and Power for use as a customer service center, but it will also house a small museum of Pacific Electric “Red Car” memorabilia.
