National League MVP Andre Dawson says that he will stay with the Chicago Cubs, regardless of his possible free-agent status, if he can sign an acceptable two-year contract with the club.
“If the contract itself is worth my while, I’ll elect to bypass free agency,” Dawson said. “Free agency isn’t what I’m concerned about.”
Dawson was awarded a $1.85-million, 1-year contract with the Cubs under arbitration on Feb. 14, but the right fielder has said he wants a multiyear deal.
The Chicago Tribune reported that an unconfirmed report that an offer worth about $4 million over two years was on the table.
