Fennis Dembo, the University of Wyoming’s leading career scorer and rebounder, has withdrawn from classes at the school, although he said he plans to return to complete work on his criminal justice degree.

Dembo said he withdrew from classes March 23 because of the Western Athletic Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournaments and his participation in two upcoming all-star games.

“It takes so much dedication to get a degree,” the forward said. “With basketball and stuff, I can’t concentrate on that. I don’t want any failing grades, so I just thought I’d withdraw.”

Dembo said he told Wyoming Coach Benny Dees and a few others of his decision when he withdrew.

“I made Coach Dees understand that I’m going to come back and get it when I want it,” he said. “He understood. The fact isn’t will you get it, it’s when you get it, and I’m going to get it. I don’t have to stress it to them. It’s not going to matter to them. It’s for myself and my family.”

By withdrawing with satisfactory marks, Dembo is eligible to return to the university.

Dembo is to play in the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches All-Star game today in Kansas City, Mo., as a prelude to the NCAA tournament’s Final Four and appear in Florida’s Orlando Magic tournament in mid-April.
