A San Diego jeweler drove away from his home Thursday morning and inadvertently left a satchel filled with a “sizable amount” of precious stones sitting on the sidewalk, police said.

The jeweler, whose identity was not disclosed, left the black leather satchel, containing diamonds and gold settings, outside his car as he drove away from his home in the 1900 block of 30th Street, Detective John Tefft said.

The jeweler realized the satchel was missing when he arrived at a nearby garage where his car was to be repaired, Tefft said. He came “flying back and there was no satchel,” he said.

Tefft said several witnesses told police that a teen-age girl was seen going door-to-door in the area trying to find the owner of the satchel. The girl has not been located, he said.

“We believe that she’s probably trying to be a good citizen, but at this point she hasn’t called police,” Tefft said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 531-2033.
