Just a Three-Inch Story on Fouts’ Retirement
I opened the March 25th sports pages with anticipation. One of the greatest quarterbacks ever to touch a football had retired. Dan Fouts, holder of seven NFL records and the most prolific passer in the game’s most exciting offense, was gone. Here would be an article to save and show the grandkids when they ask: Who was the best quarterback you ever saw, Grandpa?
I searched in vain for even a mention of this fact and, finally, on the last page, was a one-column, three-inch story.
Give me a break! I know Hollywood is having a writers’ strike; what’s your excuse, an Arab embargo on ink?
If a journeyman Ram lineman had retired, we would have seen a half-page article on Page 3, minimum. So, quit sucking up coffee and doughnuts and get to work.
