Trainer Charlie Hadry had some advice for jockey Chris Antley before he rode Private Terms in the $302,500 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in New York.
“He is a nice one--don’t mess it up,” Hadry said, and Antley didn’t.
He rode the unbeaten 10-1 shot to victory Saturday, three-quarters of a length in front of 3-5 favorite Seeking the Gold, who was undefeated in four previous starts.
High-weighted at 126 pounds, Private Terms took the lead in the stretch and withstood a closing run by Seeking the Gold. He covered the mile in 1:34 4/5 for his sixth career victory, four this year.
Private Terms paid $23, $5.40 and $4.20. Seeking the Gold, 114 pounds including Randy Romero, paid $2.60 and $2.40. Perfect Spy, 121, with Robbie Davis aboard, returned $3.20.
Private Terms earned $181,500, boosting his earnings to $382,928.
Rhyme ‘N’ Reason survived a fall at infamous Becher’s Brook and won the 150th Grand National steeplechase as only 9 of 40 starters completed the 4 1/2-mile course at Aintree in Liverpool, England.
The 9-year-old gelding, ridden by Irishman Brendan Powell, powered past Durham Edition in the stretch to win by four lengths. Monanore, a 33-1 shot, was third.
Rhyme ‘N’ Reason rallied from last place after his fall at the sixth of the 30 hurdles.
All Sincerity, a $20,000 claimer, held off late challenges by favorites Creme Fraiche and Blazing Bart to break the track record in a wire-to-wire victory in the $200,000 McKnight Invitational at Calder Race Course in Miami.
A 20-1 shot ridden by Constantino Hernandez, All Sincerity covered the 1 1/2 miles in 2:25 4/5, breaking the mark of 2:25 4/5 set in 1985 by Flying Pidgeon.
All Sincerity paid $41.80, $10.80, and $4.20, while Blazing Bart returned $4.20 and $3, and Creme Fraiche paid $2.80.
