NBA Roundup : Walker’s Shot Keeps Bullets in Running for Playoffs

Darrell Walker hit a 20-footer with one second remaining Monday night at Atlanta to give the Washington Bullets an 86-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, keeping the Bullets’ National Basketball Assn. playoff chances alive.

The Bullets remained tied with the New York Knicks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Atlanta, which made up a 13-point first-quarter deficit, took an 85-83 lead on John Battle’s eight-footer with 50 seconds left.

The Bullets got within 85-84 when John Williams hit one of two free throws with 32 seconds left.

New York 114, Detroit 111--Patrick Ewing scored 36 points, including a go-ahead basket with 23 seconds left in overtime, and the Knicks overcame the Pistons at New York.

Despite the loss, Detroit stayed two games ahead of second-place Atlanta in the Central Division.

Isiah Thomas, who scored 23 of his 31 points in the last 15 minutes of regulation, gave the Pistons a 103-102 lead on a jumper with four seconds left, but Ewing was fouled on the inbounds pass and made 1 of 2 free throws to force the overtime.

Philadelphia 115, Milwaukee 102--Charles Barkley scored 31 points, and the 76ers kept their playoff hopes alive by beating the Bucks at Milwaukee.

Milwaukee took a 100-99 lead with 3:59 left on a free throw by Jack Sikma after a technical foul against Barkley, but Philadelphia scored 10 straight points to take command.

Ricky Pierce had 20 points for the Bucks, who played without Paul Pressey, who has a sprained ankle, and leading scorer Terry Cummings, who was attending the funeral of a friend.

Indiana 95, New Jersey 93--Wayman Tisdale scored 32 points, and John Long sank the winning basket at the buzzer to lift the Pacers to a victory over the Nets at Indianapolis.

Tim McCormick scored 20 points and Buck Williams added 14 points and 20 rebounds for New Jersey, which lost its 11th straight game.

Denver 123, Phoenix 119--Fat Lever scored 26 points, and the Nuggets moved to within one game of Midwest Division leader Dallas by beating the Suns at Phoenix.

Michael Adams of Denver extended his NBA record to 32 games with at least one three-point basket. Adams had 23 points, including 5 three-pointers.

Utah 113, Golden State 102--Karl Malone had 36 points and 13 rebounds, and the Jazz got past the Warriors at Oakland.
