A search is on for the occupants of a red Chevrolet Camaro after the driver of the car took two shots Wednesday at a San Diego police officer conducting a traffic check in Rancho Penasquitos.

Officer Arthur B. Tucker pulled the car, an early 1970s model, into a shopping center parking lot at Carmel Mountain Road and Paseo Cardiel at 5:20 a.m. because it had no license plate, Sgt. Anne O’Dell said.

As Tucker approached the driver, he noticed a revolver being pointed out the driver’s open window. Tucker dropped to the ground and drew his own weapon as two shots were fired at him. Tucker fired four shots at the car, which then drove off northbound on Paseo Cardiel, police said.

Tucker was unharmed, and it is unknown if any of his shots hit the suspects’ vehicle, police said.
