High School Baseball : Sharts Continues Assault on Record Book

The hits keep coming for Simi Valley’s Scott Sharts. And the records keep falling.

After setting the Southern Section record for career home runs two weeks ago when he belted his 26th, Sharts set three school records Wednesday in the Pioneers’ 16-2 drubbing of host Newbury Park in a Marmonte League game.

Sharts hit his 12th home run of the season, breaking his own school record of 11 set last season. He also drove in four runs to bring his career total to 84. Sean Murphy set the previous record of 82 in 1985-86.

Sharts’ 3-for-4 performance also gave him 97 hits for his career, breaking the school record of 96 set by Mike Hankins in 1984-86.

And, of course, with every home run he hits, Sharts continues to break his own Southern Section record. He’s at 29 and counting.

Darren Aurand went 4 for 5 with a home run and double for the Pioneers (14-5, 4-1).

Starter Jeff Berman (3-5) went three innings in picking up the loss. Newbury Park dropped to 9-9, 2-4.

Thousand Oaks 7, Channel Islands 3--Dan Chergey hit a grand slam and threw a seven-hitter to lead the Lancers to a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Chergey hit the first pitch he saw in the sixth over the center-field fence. He also struck out five and did not allow a walk.

Canoga Park 6, Cleveland 0--Mike Kerber pitched a two-hitter and added a run-scoring fly ball in the West Valley League game at Cleveland.

The Hunters broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the third. Del Marine singled home a run and Kerber knocked in another with his sacrifice fly.

Jason Mitchell singled home two runs in Canoga Park’s four-run sixth. Kerber (1-1) struck out nine as the Hunters improved to 3-3 in league play.

Reseda 4, Taft 2--The Regents had to escape from a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning to earn a West Valley League victory over visiting Taft.

Reseda starter Steve Brody got two quick outs in the seventh but Mike Kimelman doubled and Adam Zutler drove him home with a triple. Brody then allowed a single and a walk to load the bases before Rich Cosentino grounded out to second to end the game.

Brody (5-2) had 10 strikeouts and seven walks for Reseda (6-4, 3-3). Taft dropped to 3-3 in league play.

Westlake 12, Royal 3--Mike Suarez went 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs to lead the Westlake romp at Royal in a Marmonte League game.

Other big hitters for the Warriors included Mike Lieberthal (2 for 3, two RBIs), Craig Cooper (2 for 3, two runs), Carlton Lance (2 for 4, two RBIs) and Derek Tamburro (2 for 3, one RBI).

Sophomore Mike Eby (5-1) struck out four and walked two for Westlake (11-7, 3-2).

San Fernando 19, Van Nuys 3-- Albert Torres drove in five runs in leading San Fernando to an easy Mid-Valley League win at home.

Rudy Sanchez had four RBIs and Josh Bergara went 3 for 4, scored 5 runs and drove in 3 for the Tigers (5-3, 5-1), who roughed up four Van Nuys pitchers.

Birmingham 8, Monroe 7--Mike Shelofsky singled home Justin Bass with the bases loaded in the sixth with the winning run in the Mid-Valley League game at Birmingham.

Lindsey Parker had three of Birmingham’s 15 hits, scored two runs and stole two bases.

Shelofsky went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Bass was 2 for 2 with three runs scored.

Birmingham improved to 6-4, 3-3. Monroe dropped to 2-4 in league play.

Poly 8, Fairfax 4--The Parrots exploded for five runs on three hits, a walk, a hit batter and an error in the top of the seventh inning on their way to an East Valley League victory at Fairfax.

Nick Lymberopoulos threw a complete game for Poly (12-2, 10-0) and had a two-run double in the seventh. Lymberopoulos, an All-City pitcher-first baseman, struck out 10 but walked 4 and gave up 5 hits. Lymberopoulos, who had not allowed an earned run in 14 innings before the Fairfax game, gave up three in the second and one in the seventh.

North Hollywood 7, Verdugo Hills 4--Russell Greene hit a solo home run and Benny Valdez went the distance for the Huskies in an East Valley League game at Verdugo Hills.

Valdez (3-1) struck out four as North Hollywood improved to 5-4 in league play. Bob Surbeck hit a solo home run and went 2 for 4 for Verdugo Hills (3-11, 2-8).

Grant 9, Hollywood 4--Four Grant players had three hits as the Lancers won an East Valley League game at Hollywood.

Javier Delahoya had three hits, including a two-run home run, his fourth. Jim Mattman, John Kukawski and Sean Goldman also had three hits each for the Lancers (7-6, 5-4).

Jason Parker went the distance for Grant. Parker, a junior, struck out 13 but walked 10. He had a no-hitter through 4 innings and a shutout until giving up a grand slam in the seventh inning.

Oakwood 16, Queen of Angels 5--Adam Mehr, in his first game back after recovering from a broken ankle, drove in three runs, stole three bases and had two hits in a seven-run first inning to lead Oakwood in a Liberty League opener.
