Beverly Hills : Tanenbaum Chosen as Mayor

The City Council this week elected Councilman Robert K. Tanenbaum to a one-year term as mayor. He pledged to provide foot-patrol police officers in the business districts on South Beverly and Robertson boulevards and to push for a change in the city rent control ordinance to require just cause for evictions.

Councilman Maxwell H. Salter was chosen vice mayor for a one-year term, and newly elected council members Allan L. Alexander, Vicki Reynolds and Bernard J. Hecht were sworn into office for four-year terms in a ceremony under a tent on the City Hall lawn.

Benjamin F. Sanford was sworn in as city treasurer.

In Beverly Hills, the office of mayor rotates annually among the five council members. It is primarily a ceremonial position. The mayor runs the council meetings but has only one vote and no veto power. All council members, including the mayor, receive $330 a month.

The city treasurer is paid $1 a year, although outgoing four-term Treasurer Ramon I. Gerson told the council that the salary should be increased to a level comparable to council salaries.

Neither Gerson nor any of the outgoing council members--Benjamin H. Stansbury Jr., Donna Ellman and Charlotte Spadaro-- sought reelection in the April 12 municipal election.
