College Roundup : Kaub’s 4 RBIs Help Titans Defeat Irvine

Keith Kaub had a three-run home run and four RBIs Friday to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 11-7 victory over UC Irvine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at Fullerton.

Brent Mayne, a sophomore transfer from Orange Coast, had two hits, including a first-inning single that extended his PCAA-record hitting streak to 25 games.

Fullerton scored two runs in the first on a two-run home run by Shane Flores after Rex Peters has singled with one out. In the third, Peters led off with a home run, and Kaub later added a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

Irvine scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Robinson and two more in the fifth on a solo home run by Jeff Oberdank, his sixth, and an RBI double by Stacy Parker.

Peters was hit by a pitch to open the fifth inning, and Flores reached on an error by second baseman Oberdank. Irvine starter Jeff Haack was able to retire the next two hitter, but then Kaub connected for a home run, his 12th of the season, to give Fullerton a 7-3 lead. Kaub, a senior from Golden West, is tied with Mike Ross for the team home-run lead.

Longo Garcia (8-3) pitched the first six innings for the victory for Fullerton (32-11, 10-3). Fullerton trails first-place Fresno State by 2 1/2 games.

Haack took the loss for Irvine (26-22-1, 5-8).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 7, Cal Poly Pomona 4--Jeff Mooney (8-4) pitched 7 innings of four-hit relief for visiting Chapman (23-19-1, 12-8). Mooney, a senior right-hander, replaced David Bird in the second inning. Bird had given up 5 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs before being replaced.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-5, UC Santa Barbara 2-0--Carey Hess had three hits, including a three-run double, for visiting Fullerton (45-13, 19-7) in the first game at Santa Barbara. Anjie Bryant (22-6) pitched a seven-hitter for the victory. Janis Okerlund (12-2) threw a three-hitter with two strikeouts in the second game for Fullerton. Santa Barbara is 5-43, 2-24.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Bakersfield 6-1, Chapman 4-0--Host Bakersfield scored four in the first inning of the first game and coasted to victory. Lisa Drollinger (11-1) shut out Chapman on five hits in the second game.
