A Costa Mesa man was killed Tuesday when his motorcycle crashed as he tried to pass a tractor-trailer rig in Costa Mesa, police said.

Peter Benjamin Crummett, 31, was pronounced dead at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center shortly after the 12:20 p.m. accident in the 1700 block of Newport Boulevard.

Police said Crummett was traveling north when he tried to pass the truck on the right. As he did so, police said, the motorcycle handlebar hit the right front fender of the truck, causing Crummett to fall under the rear wheels of the truck and trailer.

The truck driver, a 35-year-old Westminster man, told police he never saw the motorcyclist. He was not cited.
