Local News in Brief : Road Shut to Stop Cruising

Share

Sheriff’s deputies have started blocking off about a mile of Whittier Boulevard in Pico Rivera on weekend nights in hopes of driving away hundreds of cruisers who have been clogging the streets of the city.

Starting at 9 p.m. on weekends, only area residents who show identification are being allowed to drive on Whittier Boulevard between Paramount and Passons boulevards, Sgt. Susan Perez said. The shutdown began the weekend of May 21 and will continue as long as cruising is a problem, Perez said.

Despite the barricades, deputies issued 246 cruising-related violations over the Memorial Day weekend, she said. Since July, 1987, more than 4,500 such citations have been issued, she said, and the extra law enforcement has cost the city more than $90,000.
