A fast-moving brush fire, fed by high winds, destroyed six homes and charred 1,800 acres just west of the Riverside County community of Desert Hot Springs, fire officials said. Hundreds of residents were evacuated to a Red Cross shelter while the fire raged for three hours before being contained. Riverside County Fire Capt. Brenda Seabert said no one was injured in the blaze in the Painted Hills area, east of the Colorado River aqueduct. Cause of the fire was under investigation. Officials had no immediate estimate of damage.
