Mayweather Injured in 2-Car Collision the Day After Defending Boxing Title
Roger Mayweather, who successfully defended his World Boxing Council super lightweight title in a bruising battle the night before, was injured Tuesday when his car hit another vehicle near the Las Vegas Hilton.
Mayweather was taken by ambulance to Humana Hospital Sunrise, where he was treated for multiple cuts and released.
Mayweather was issued five citations, including crossing a yellow line to cause the accident, driving without a valid driver’s license and driving with no insurance, according to Metro Police Sgt. Steve Tuggle.
The accident occurred as other fighters from the Monday night card were holding a news conference inside the hotel.
“His manager said he took a pretty good beating the night before and, in fact, he was apparently on his way to the hospital to see if his jaw was broken,” Tuggle said.
The driver of the second car, who was not identified, was also treated and released from the hospital.
Mayweather, of Las Vegas, won a slugfest Monday night against Harold Brazier of South Bend, Ind., to defend his WBC 140-pound title.
Mayweather gained a split decision despite being rocked on several occasions by Brazier, including the ninth round when he appeared out on his feet after Brazier landed 12 unanswered punches to the head.
