Spring Sports Notebook : Hawking Leaves Simi Valley High for Post as Pepperdine Assistant

Bob Hawking, who coached Simi Valley High to the Southern Section 4-A Division basketball title this season, was named Wednesday as an assistant coach at Pepperdine.

Hawking, who will assist first-year Coach Tom Asbury, resigned last week after 14 years as the winningest coach in school history. The Pioneers won 81 of 90 games the past three years and posted a record of 230-119 under Hawking.

Dean Bradshaw, Simi Valley’s junior varsity and assistant varsity coach the past six years, was named to replace Hawking. Dave Ellis, Simi Valley principal, believes Bradshaw is an able replacement.

“He knows how and when to pay a compliment and is not afraid to do it, which is a good quality when dealing with young people,” Ellis said.

Bradshaw compiled a 12-year record of 172-64 as a lower-level coach at Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks.

A running state: As easy as one, two, three, Angela Burnham stepped off the second and third state track titles of her high school career Saturday in Norwalk.

The Rio Mesa High junior overcame Hueneme’s Simone Cain down the straightaway of the 200-meter dash to win in a time of 23.45. She led from start to finish in the 100, crossing the tape in 11.52 seconds, the second fastest high school time in the nation this year.

Burnham, state champion in the 100 as a freshman, also anchored the 400-meter relay team. Rio Mesa tied Bakersfield for the team title.

Going south: Royal High catcher Travis Kinyoun, who led the Highlanders with a .391 batting average, was selected Sunday to play in the North-South All-Star baseball series.

The three-game series is to be played June 11-13 at San Diego State. At the end of the weekend, a team will be chosen to represent California against a similar team from Oklahoma.

Kinyoun, who was picked for the South team, will play for College of the Canyons next season. He was chosen in the 36th round by the Detroit Tigers in last week’s free-agent draft but said he will not sign.

Kinyoun is the first Royal player to play in the North-South All-Star event.

Add draft: Pitcher Dean McMillin of Ventura was not selected by the Kansas City Royals until the 32nd round, but the team is making a strong effort to sign him.

“Dean has been offered a substantial amount of money,” Ventura Coach Dan Smith said.

McMillin is a hard-throwing left-hander who registered 115 strikeouts in 82 innings this season.

Other county high school players drafted include Camarillo outfielder Gil Valencia (Philadelphia Phillies), Rio Mesa left-handed pitcher Derron Spiller (St. Louis Cardinals), Ventura outfielder Steve Dailey (Atlanta Braves), Santa Clara right-handed pitcher Mike Teron (Minnesota Twins) and Simi Valley first baseman Scott Sharts (Pittsburgh Pirates).

Legion expansion: Two teams from Scottsdale, Ariz., one from Cherry Creek, Colo., and another from Calgary have been added to the Gene Waid Memorial Classic, an American Legion baseball tournament sponsored by Camarillo’s legion team.

The tournament is scheduled for July 1-4 at Rio Mesa High. Teams from Westlake, Ventura and Royal also have entered the eight-team tournament.

Wet and wild: Rough waters forced the inaugural Ventura Channel Dash power-boat race Saturday to be reduced from 107 miles to 53. The race was from the Ventura Harbor to Santa Barbara.

Bob Nordskog, a 75-year-old driver who is president of the Pacific Offshore Power Boating Assn, won the race.

Gold Coast crew: The Gold Coast Gymnastics team of Ventura won the junior olympics state championship Saturday at Westlake High. Sixteen teams from Santa Barbara to San Diego competed in six divisions for 9- to 14-year-olds.

Gold Coast had three first-place, all-around medal winners. Jamie Sommers won the 13-year-old division, Rebecca Seebirt won the 12-year-old division and Perine Pelegrine won the 11-year-old division.

Also placing for Gold Coast were 9-year-old April Hatch, 12-year-old Susan Bensen and 11-year-olds Jenna Bush and Holly Colborn.

Benefit tournament: The 17th Kingsmen Golf Classic to benefit the Cal Lutheran football team will be held June 13 at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley. The tournament is open to the public and carries a $200 entry fee.

Former CLU football player Hank Bauer will be honored with the Kingsmen Alumni Achievement Award afterward.

Bauer will become the fourth recipient of the award, joining Sam Cvijanovich, Brian Kelley and Mike Shepherd.

Registration deadline for the tournament is Friday.
