Two suspected gang members have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the shooting of a 15-year-old student outside University High School in West Los Angeles, Los Angeles police said Friday.

The two 17-year-old suspects, whose names were not released because they are juveniles, are accused of wounding sophomore Christine Herrera in the leg when they fired into a group of students less than a block away from the campus shortly after classes ended Thursday.

Lt. Gabe Ornelas said Herrera was walking with a group that included gang members and may have been the victim of a stray bullet. She was released Friday from UCLA Medical Center Friday.

Principal Jack Moscowitz said that members of rival gangs attend University High School but that the shooting appeared to be “an isolated incident.” The youths who were arrested have not attended University High, he said.

In a one-year period ending in June, 1987, 145 assaults with a deadly weapon were reported on Los Angeles Unified School District campuses, spokesman Marty Estrin said. Only “a very small percentage” of those assaults involved shootings, he said.
