Kids Can Inspect Military Planes at Aviation Expo-88

Share

At Aviation Expo-88, today and Sunday at Van Nuys Airport, kids can climb into C-130s, KC-135s and P-3 Orions--just a few of more than 50 military aircraft that will be on display. This full military spread of fighter and support aircraft of the Air Force, Navy and Marines has flown here from as far away as Bangor, Me., and Jacksonville, Fla.

Flying demonstrations between 1 and 3 p.m. both days will feature the C-130 Hercules and the Condor Squadron. Another C-130 will be deployed as a hospital ship and open for viewing.

Food and Souvenirs

The expo will be at the Air National Guard site at the airport, 8030 Balboa Blvd., Van Nuys. Parking is outside the gate, admission is free. Profits from food (hot dogs, sodas and beer) and souvenir concessions will benefit 20 local charities, including the Boy Scouts and the Lou Gehrig Disease Foundation.

The airport’s regular tour buses and guides will give 30-minute tours of the airport facilities. The busiest general aviation airport in the world, it offers tours daily; this weekend the pickup point will be at the expo, with departures every 20 minutes. The tour includes a drive-by of the facilities and private aircraft, with a talk on how the airport functions.

Air show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Information: (818) 785-8838.
