Downey Student Selected for Girls State

Ginger Allen, a junior at Downey High School, has been selected to represent her school at the California Girls State Convention. She was chosen from a list of teacher nominations based on high academic records, participation in school activities and performance during interviews. Allen, 16, is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad and Normaneers, a campus service club. In successive years, she has been president of her freshman, sophomore and junior classes, and was a homecoming princess this school year. She also is a five-semester member of the California Scholarship Federation, and is involved with the Students Against Drunk Drivers program in Downey.

The Girls State Convention, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, will be held June 20 to 27 at Cal State Fresno. It will attract more than 150 high school girls from throughout the state to study the governmental processes and policies from local to state levels. The girls will form their own “state” during the eight-day meeting, choose city and county representatives, function as political parties, elect their own officers and conduct a mock legislative session.
