Local News in Brief : Fire Hits School Gym
An afternoon fire Monday swept through the gymnasium of a Norwalk high school, heavily damaging the building and destroying athletic equipment.
No injuries were reported in the blaze at John H. Glenn High School, which broke out about 3:30, after classes had been dismissed for the day, but damage was estimated by fire officials at $2 million.
Workmen were refinishing bleachers in the gym, and Los Angeles County firefighters speculated that vapors may have sparked a flash fire that spread quickly through the building. “We’re not looking at arson,” Battalion Chief Gordon S. Pearson said.
