Local News in Brief : Beverly Glen Delay Mild
Commuters who drive Beverly Glen Boulevard to work faced few of the traffic delays that transportation officials had predicted when the road was closed Monday for two months of storm drain and road improvements, officials said.
The closure of the popular cross-mountain route between the San Fernando Valley and the Westside forced up to 2,000 motorists an hour during peak traffic periods onto alternative routes such as the San Diego Freeway, Sepulveda Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Avenue.
The San Diego Freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard were “busier than most days,” said Thomas Conner, city Department of Transportation chief engineer. Motorists who took Coldwater Canyon experienced “delays of no more than 10 minutes” beyond what they normally face, he said.
Before Monday, transportation authorities had feared gridlock on roads leading to Beverly Glen Boulevard if motorists had not avoided it.
The road closure is part of the second phase of a $1.8-million storm drain and road resurfacing project by the city and county of Los Angeles, scheduled for completion by Aug. 12.
