Greg Maddux: The Chicago Cubs’ 13-game winner has pitched 130 innings this year and held the opposition scoreless in 95 of them. Maddux, of course, is certain to be in Cincinnati for the All-Star game July 12, but he may not pitch. He is scheduled to start against the San Diego Padres on July 10.

-- Jeff Russell: The Texas Rangers’ right-hander, formerly used in relief, is 6-0 in 7 starts this year and 7-0 overall. He has thrown three straight complete games and says, “I want to go home for the All-Star game.” Home is Cincinnati.

-- Dave Stewart: The Oakland Athletics’ right-hander, the first pitcher in the American League to reach 8 wins, was the sixth to reach 10.

-- Gary Pettis: It will probably come as no surprise to Angel fans, but when their former center fielder flied out for the Detroit Tigers in his first at-bat of Wednesday night’s game with the New York Yankees, he snapped a string of eight consecutive strikeouts.

-- Bobby Thigpen: The Chicago White Sox relief ace, leading the American League in appearances with 35 through Thursday, is two different pitchers. He has converted 13 of 16 save chances and has a 1.33 earned-run average with games on the line. In his other, less meaningful 19 appearances, he has a 6.14 ERA, allowing 15 earned runs in 22 innings.

-- Jerry Reuss: The former Dodger left-hander celebrated his 39th birthday with the White Sox last Sunday and said: “Somebody asked me what the perfect gift would be, and I said, ‘Pitching on my 40th.’ ”

-- Fred Lynn: The Baltimore Orioles’ center fielder could be headed for the Athletics, providing the Orioles retain some of his salary, which is $1.45 million this year and $1.5 million next year.

-- Greg Swindell: The Cleveland Indians’ left-hander has fallen on hard times. He is 0-5 in his last 5 starts, having allowed 46 hits and 21 earned runs in 27 innings.
