Residents and police officers chased a naked man around a Santa Ana neighborhood Friday morning after he tried to break into several apartments.

By the time they caught him leaping from the balcony of a second-story apartment, he was wearing shorts and a T-shirt he took from a 62-year-old woman, Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said.

Police identified the man as Robert Keith Dore, 25, of Santa Ana, who was in Orange County Jail on Friday on suspicion of burglary and attempted burglary.

Thomas said Dore began his spree at 4:30 a.m., when he broke the living room window in an apartment at the Heartstone complex on East Santa Clara Street. However, he did not enter the apartment, Thomas said.

Residents called police, and when they heard someone trying to break into the apartment next door, they ran after him, she said.

Thomas said that residents saw Dore jump over a brick wall and that when police arrived they spotted him on the roof of another apartment complex on the 2300 block of East Franzen Street, then saw him climb down a tree.

Dore went through an open door of another apartment, where a 62-year-old woman was sleeping, Thomas said.

“He tries to crawl in bed with her, but she wakes up and startles him,” she said. “He then ransacks her bedroom. . . . Then he puts on a pair (of her) shorts and a T-shirt.”

The woman managed to call police, Thomas said. When the officers went to the door, Dore jumped from the balcony to the patio below, walked up to officers and was arrested, she said.
