Bill Elliott, who has started in the front row at the Firecracker 400 the past three years, will be five spots from the back of the 42-car field when today’s race begins in Daytona Beach, Fla. Elliott sat out Friday’s second-day qualification session, passing up a chance to improve his starting position. Elliott’s qualifying speed Thursday was 184.502 m.p.h. Darrell Waltrip won the pole at 193.819 m.p.h.
